I'd also recommend Gaudy Night by Dorothy Sayers (set in Oxford, so enchanting--though maybe a bit slow) and Me & Emma (I may have recommended this to you earlier?). Just read "Sign of the Beaver" again for a summary I had to write with my son since we read it together five years ago and I couldn't quite remember the details and I read "Mandy" by Julie Andrews.
